OUR MISSION:  The mission of the Charles Smithgall Humane Society of White County is to prevent neglect, cruelty, and exploitation of White County's animals.  We will educate our citizens and leaders to increase awareness and to encourage more responsible and humane care for our animals.

ABOUT US

The Charles Smithgall Humane Society was organized in 1990 by a group of White County citizens to form a humane society and build an animal shelter for the many neglected, abused and stray animals in our county.  After much hard work on the part of a dedicated few, the Society became a confirmed 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, adopted under the by-laws of the State of Georgia.  Members elect the Board of Directors who oversee the operation of the Society and Animal Shelter.  The Humane Society derives income from dues, donations and fundraising activities.  Donations are tax-exempt under the corporation's 501(c)3 status.

Community Service & Services Offered

Educating the public about responsible animal ownership is a priority for the Society.  Volunteers work with White County Schools to provide a Humane Education Program through Partners in Education in the hopes of fostering better understanding as adults in preventing ongoing animal abuse and neglect patterns.  Volunteers also offer Pet Therapy in the local nursing homes and schools.  The Society also works with Circle of Hope (http://www.gacircleofhope.org/), a domestic violence shelter covering Habersham, Stephens and White Counties in order to emphasize the link between pet abuse and violence of all kinds, particularly domestic violence.  We offer cremation services ($100 private), lost and found, and many more.

The Smithgall Woods Animal Shelter opened November 1996.  Named for Charles Smithgall, a generous benefactor who made the shelter possible by providing land, as well as funding for construction, this facility is run by a caring, dedicated staff along with devoted volunteers.  Humane Society members and friends of animals provided the balance of funds the shelter needed for its completion.  The shelter is owned and operated by the Charles Smithgall Humane Society of White County.  Funding shelter operations comes from adoption fees and Humane Society funds.  The Society is responsible for all maintenance and upkeep of the shelter property and buildings.  Those monies come from fundraising activities and private donations.  Animals are received at the shelter from White County citizens, and a donation is requested. We are 100% privately funded.
